Title: The first Silmarillion map
Artist: J.R.R. Tolkien

1920s

Tolkien drew the first detailed map of Middle-earth on an unused page from a University of Leeds examination booklet. The wonderful names, such as Taur-na-Fuin (Forest of Deadly Nightshade) and Dor-na-Fauglith (The Thirsty Plain), link it to his writings from the 1920s. MS. Tolkien S 2/X, fol. 3r. Reproduced with kind permission of The Tolkien Estate Limited for the Bodleian Libraries exhibition Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth.
